Minister of Energy Newton Kambala says the country has maintained fuel prices for the past months despite neighboring countries increasing the same for the commodity.
Kambala said this on wednesday on the sidelines of the opening of the Engen-branded Likuni service station by Vivo Energy Limited.
Kambala said government has not increased the fuel prices in the past months despite recommendations from the fuel pricing committee.
He said South Africa and Tanzania fuel prices are higher than Malawi although the country gets its fuel from their ports.
”The country could have been increasing fuel prices on a monthly basis but, considering that Malawians are under pressure due to Covid, we got guidance from the head of state who asked us to find other means to cushion the pricing of fuels. That is why they remain low.” said Kambala.
Kambala then urged oil companies to emulate Vivo Energy Limited’s gesture to include Malawians in the administration of the filling stations.
Vivo Energy Ltd Managing Director Shaban Kayungilo said his company which is a shell and Engen Licencee, believes in providing quality solutions to motorists.
Kayungilo said his company has invested in the country and expanded the retail network of Engen branded service stations.
”We expect to give the best image of the Engen-brand. Through quality fuels, right quantity and professional services, we are confident that we will give our customers the best services,” Kayungilo said.
Vivo Energy Ltd is currently operating a network of 30 Engen service station across the country.
