The Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (Reiama) says it is geared to implement projects through its membership to contribute towards achieving universal energy coverage in Malawi by 2030.
The development is in line with Malawi 2063 (MW2063) Vision and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number seven which promotes renewable and sustainable energy for development.
In an interview on the sidelines of the association’s annual general meeting in Lilongwe on Friday, Reiama’s newly elected president Soustain Chigalu said MW2063, can only be realised with sufficient and sustainable energy.
He said: “We cannot achieve MW2063 pillars without clean, affordable and sustainable energy.
“The sustainable renewable energy that Reiama is advocating for is freely given energy sources endowed by nature.
Current access to renewable energy is low at six percent while only 12 percent is connected to the national grid; hence, pegging national energy coverage at 18 percent.
Chigalu said his vision is to make Malawi energy mix sufficient and sustainable with renewable energy through policy, advocacy, implementation and evaluation which he said will partly be achieved through advocating for research, quality and sustainable energy products and services.
Ministry of Energy assistant director of energy Thokozani Malunga said renewable energy is crucial to the development of Malawi as it is sustainable and affordable.
