Salima Council embarks on climate resilience project

11 Feb 2025

Salima District Council acting director of natural resources and environment Adam Jason says the district will implement a Least Developed Countries Initiative for Effective Adaptation and Resilience (Life-AR) to overcome climate change challenges.

Speaking on Thursday during an extraordinary full council meeting, he said the project will support communities to plant trees in depleted forests and help farmers with good farming practices.

Jason said they will implement the initiative under the Improved Community Resilience to Climate Change through Ecosystem Restoration and Livelihood Support.

He said: “This is a pilot initiative running in least developed countries. Salima in Malawi happens to be one of the implementing sites. That is why we want to prepare people to participate in the project.

“It is a three-year initiative to the tune of K2 billion and will run at Chifuchambewa in Traditional Authority [T/A] Khombedza, Mkhanje in T/A Makanjira and Chimoga in T/A Ndindi.”

In his remarks, Senior Chief Khombedza welcomed the project, saying it will help reverse deforestation in the area.

“I am excited that the project will address some of the climate challenges that my subjects are facing such as dry spells and floods,” he said.

On his part, T/A Kambwiri said he will encourage his subjects to embrace good agricultural practices to mitigate the impact of climate change.

The initiative will also run in Mangochi and Rumphi districts with the funds being provided in three phases.

Life-AR was launched in 2018 at Conference of Parties (CoP) 24 to reshape the climate finance landscape
