Serengeti Energy plans another solar power plant

06 Sep 2024

Serengeti Energy, a private solar energy generation company, says it intends to develop another solar power plant in Nkhotakota to complement their current investment in the district.
Speaking during a media tour on Tuesday, the plant’s manager Paul Mhango said they have already acquired land adjacent to their current power plant and are at an advanced planning stage for the construction.
“The land acquisition was already done, but there are other issues to finalise before we can set a date and negotiate other terms such as the capacity of energy to be produced at the plant,” he said.
Nkhotakota District Council spokesperson Wongani Mkandawire said they have always been supportive of the project because it will not only benefit the country through the electricity added to the national grid, but also people in the district through creation of jobs.
He said the firm is also engaged in corporate social responsibility programmes in the district.
The Ministry of Energy is implementing various projects in the energy sector to increase power production.
Serengeti Energy Limited, through its solar plant in the district, generates 21 megawatts which is added on to the national electricity grid.
The firm signed a power purchase agreement with Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi.
