President Lazarus Chakwera hopes that power outages the country is experiencing would reduce significantly once the Mozambique-Malawi interconnector project is finalised.
Chakwera arrived Sunday from Mozambique, where he had several official engagements including gracing the launch of the interconnector project.
The project, which Malawi launched in October last year, involves the construction of power lines with the capacity to carry 400 kilovolts.
Speaking on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport Sunday, Chakwera said there were several benefits for the two countries, one of them being the interconnector project.
“Tili n’chiyembekezo kuti vuto lomwe tili nalo la magetsi lizachepa kwambiri chifukwa cha kuthekera kumeneku [We have hope that the power supply challenge we are facing will be partly addressed because of this project],” Chakwera said.
While in Mozambique, he held bilateral talks with that country’s president Filipe Nyuse on socio-economic development projects in the two countries.
The Malawi leader also inspected Nacala Port, after the two neighbours recently signed three agreements, namely Development Corridor Agreement, the Railway Agreement as well as the Road Transport Agreement.
Chakwera finished the tour by being part of a business forum at which officials of the two nations agreed to address challenges that exist in terms of trade.
As Southern African Development Community Chairperson (Sadc), he was updated on the conflict in Cabo Delgado in Mozambique.
“I was updated on what is going on there,” he said.
Chakwera left Malawi on Thursday last week.
