President Lazarus Chakwera has called on various stakeholders in the energy sector to collaborate in overcoming challenges in three projects that aim at increasing people’s access to electricity.
He made the call on Tuesday at Capital Hill when he worked from the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC).
According to a news release shared by State House, the country is expected to implement the Mpatamanga 350 MW Hydro-Power Project, Mozambique-Malawi Interconnector Project and the Malawi Electrification Access Project representing a $1.5 billion foreign direct investment.
The projects are aimed at doubling the number of Malawians with access to electricity in the next few years.
Chakwera said: “Together with technocrats and relevant stakeholders, we tackled red tape and administrative obstacles that have delayed the implementation of the [Project].”
The President convened a meeting of senior officials from the Ministry of Energy, Electricity Generation Company, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi, Roads Authority, Public Private Partnership Commission and the World Bank to resolve some bottleneck facing the projects.
“To address the challenges and push for progress towards energy sufficiency for Malawi, I called in senior officials to collaborate in removing all existing bottlenecks towards expedited implementation of the projects,” he said.
Since the beginning of 2022, the President has been dividing his time between his office at Capital Hill, where he deals with key development priorities in the PDU and Kamuzu Palace where he tackles governance and State matters.
