GreenTech Energy Company has installed solar-powered electricity and donated a refrigerator to Mtende Health Centre in Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba District.
Speaking on Tuesday during the handover, GreenTech Energy Company director Douglas Muyaba said they were touched by a video clip aired on MBC Television showing darkness around the health centre during the night.
He said: “We learned that pregnant women delivered using [light from] torches and candles.
“We also donated a fridge that uses solar batteries for the health facility to store medicines.”
On his part, Inkosiya Makosi M’Mbelwa V commended the company for the donations.
“The use of candles during delivery was dangerous as candles produce smoke. Smoke is hazardous to newborn babies,” he said.
The paramount chief appealed to community members and health workers to take care of the items.
Tereza Nyirenda, an expectant mother in the labour ward at the health facility, expressed happiness with the installation of the solar-powered electricity.
Mzimba District Hospital principal administrator Louis Moyo said electricity will improve the delivery of healthcare services at the facility.
The solar equipment and refrigerator cost the company about K1.5 million.
However, the health facility is operating without running water.
