Local Government Deputy Minister Halima Daudi has urged companies to take waste management seriously, saying the government would not tolerate companies that pollute the environment.
She said this when she visited a number of companies, including Capital Oil Refining Industry (Cori) in Blantyre as one way of appreciating private sectors player’s environmental conversation efforts.
Daudi said her ministry was impressed with how the company was managing waste, appealing to other companies to ensure their operating environment are clean.
”The ministry is so impressed with the way Cori is managing its waste and adhering to safety and environment protocols. We have learned that, before dumping waste, the company ensures that the water is purified. This means that our cities are clean and are a good place to live,” Daudi said.
Cori Safety, Health, Environmental and Health Manager Lawrence Muhanga said his company had been energized and would ensure that it sustains Eco-systems through its work.
”After the deputy minister commended Cori fro adhering to safety and environmental protocols, we have been energized to put in more effort in adhering to safe and environmental protocols. We now know that we have taken the right direction in whatever we are doing,” Muhanga said.
Most rivers in the cities of Malawi are polluted, mainly through poor waste disposal management.
