Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) and The Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, and on Friday signed a three-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) on research and skills development set to benefit both students and staff.
In an interview on the sidelines of the signing ceremony held at The Polytechnic main campus in Blantyre, the institution’s principal Professor Grant Kululanga sid the relationship will benefit both The Polytechnic and Egenco.
He said: “It is not just about students going to industry for internship to understand how industry operates, but it also includes members of staff going to the industry for ex-ternship and understand a number of issues for which they could contribute to research between ourselves and Egenco.
In a separate interview Egenco chief executive officer William Liabunya said the partnership will , among others, help develop new technologies relevant to a changing environment.
He said: “We felt that on our own as a company, we could not go into detailed research and develop some technology. Through this partnership, students and staff can help us in that aspect.”
Liabunya said, at the end of the initial three-year period, they will review the MoU and decide whether to renew it or not.
