Catholic Development Commission(Cadecom) has challenged small-holder farmers in Dedza with different stakeholders on climate change to realize more yield.
Cadecom Programme Coordinator Aaron Mtaya said this on Friday during a meeting between farmers and district duty-bearers in Dedza.
”We organised the meeting to let farmers present their climate change-related grievances to relevant authorities and get feedback.”he said.
Mtaya said they took note of the farmers’ concerns as well as responses by authorities.
On his part, group village head Chikumba commended Cadecom fro their interventions in mitigating the effects of climate change in the district.
He said: ”For close to three years, we have received scanty rainfall. leading to poor harvest. This development plunged us into food insecurity.
”Luckily, Cadecom trained us to practice crop diversification, livestock farming, irrigation and planting trees.”
However, he criticized the district’s department of Disaster Management Affairs(Dodma) officials fro delaying in responding to natural disasters.
Reacting to the chief’s allegation, Dodma Dedza District assistant officer Mwayi Katundu said the delay are due to logistical issues.
”When people present their grievances, we forward reports to Dodma. Sometimes the process takes longer because we wait for feedback from the head office,” he said.
Cadecom is implementing Resource Rights Project funded by Irish Aid.
