Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) dealing in environmental mana-gement have started for caring for newly planted trees around Mudi Dam in Blantyre to enhance their survival.
Workers for Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy (Cepa), Co-ordination Unit For the Rehabilitation of the Environment (Cure), Churches Action in Relief and Development (Card) and Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (Wesm) and some casual workers last Friday weeded part of the area that has 9 000 trees planted in February this year.
One of the campaign’s organisers, Hebert Mwalukomo, said in an interview their intention was to ensure that five years from now, the trees should turn into a recognisable forest.
“We want to contribute to the conservation of this catchment area because Mudi is critical to water supply to Blantyre City residents.
“We can assure you that the trees we have weeded today will all survive and grow,” said Mwalukomo, who is also Cepa programmes director.
Cure executive director Christopher Mwambene said the NGOs came together to encourage a culture of caring for trees after planting.
The exercise is being conducted with financial support from Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust.
