Salima District Council to plant 3.5 million trees

25 Jan 2019

Salima District Council says it plans to plant 3.5 million trees in the 2018/19 tree planting season. Speaking on Tuesday on the sidelines of the district’s tree planting season launch, district forestry officer Adams Jason said they are targeting areas where trees have been destroyed due to charcoal production.

“Last year, we targeted 4.5 million trees, but we failed to achieve that. This year, we set a realistic target and we are optimistic we will achieve it because there are many players in the exercise,” he said.

Jason urged communities to manage the trees they plant. He appealed to traditional leaders and communities to help in the fight against illegal charcoal production. District commissioner Charles Mwawembe told the gathering that the council will call a special meeting to find solutions to end the malpractice. “We need to end overdependence on charcoal as a source of energy to save the environment, “ he said.
