The Energy Generation Company (Egenco) has said the outlook for energy generation in 2019 remains promising following the completion of installation of generators in Blantyre and Lilongwe that will be producing a combined 30 megawatts (MW).
Egenco also said it was banking on the rains to improve hydropower generation at its power stations. Egenco Senior Public Relations Officer, Moses Gwaza, said on Tuesday that since December the company has met the country’s power demand.
“On our part, we expect to continue having improved production as rains continue to come. We have also finalised installation of our 20MW Mapanag machines and will be commissioning the 10MW machines in Lilongwe this month.”
We hav also completed theTedzani 1, 10MW rehabilitation project and the machine is up and running so, all things being equal, we expect continued improved genertion electricity,” Gwaza said.
He further said egenco is supplying to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) an average of 240MW, adding that supply may increase once rehabilitation works are completed.
“The power stations are all in good shape except for one machine , a 26.35MW machine at Tedzani III, which is undergoing a planned major rehabilitation, modernisation and uprating to add 5MW,” Gwaza added.
This is coming at a time industry players has described frequent power outages as one of the major factors that negatively affected their operations in 2018, resulting in reduced production capacity.
Energy Minister, Aggrey Masi, recently indicated that the country’s power siuation would improve following deals that Escom has signed with neighbouring countries such as Zambia to purchase power.
