MCA-M hands over power infrastructure in the north

Millennium Challenge Account-Malawi (MCA-M), a local implementing agency of the $350.7million (about K257 billion) energy compact which would up on Sepetember 20, has officially handed over power inftrastructure constructed in the Northern Region.

The five-year compact financed by Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States (US) Governemnt agency, was aimed at expanding Malawi’s access to electricity by modernising infrastructure, institutional reforms and protevting the environment.

In the Northern Region, the inftrastructure includes Sonda and Luwinga substations in Mzuzu. New Bwengu substation in Mzimba and a 169ikilometre distribution line from Chintheche in Nkhatabay to Bwengu.

Speaking during the handover of the infrastructure at New Bwengu Substation las week, MCA_M board of trustees chairperson Simon Itaye said Malawians will now have an improve and reliable powr supply, stabilised network and quality power.

Us embassy economic affairs officer Joel Hansen said the country has laid a foundation in the power sector to meet its goals of supplying electricity to 30 percent of the population by 2030.

Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Principal Secretary Patrick Matanda sid the stability and improvement in power supply will lead to economic growth.
