Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) chief executive officer (CEO) Evelyn Mwapasa has been removed from her position and replaced with Dr Allexon Chiwaya who is making a comeback to the power utility.

In a memorandum dated November 9 2017 addressed to Escom heads of department and all staff, director of human resources and administration Daphter Namandwa said Mwapasa “has been redeployed within the public sector”.\

The memo said Chiwaya’s appointment is effective November 6.

Escom acting public relations manager George Mituka last evening authenticated the communication, saying Mwapasa has been replaced.

He said: “The changes are effective November 6th. I can confirm that Dr Chiwaya is the new CEO.”

Mwapasa was appointed Escom CEO in December last year. Prior to her joining Escom, Mwapasa, she served as a commissioner in the Public Service Reforms Commission chaired by Vice-President Saulos Chilima, was CEO for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (Icam).

On the other hand, Chiwaya left Escom in 2005 where he served as CEO. He then served as director general at Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) and Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera).

Chief Secretary to the Government Lloyd Muhara was not immediately available to explain Mwapasa’s next posting in the public sector.
