Firm invests K2.5 billion in electric car project

28 Aug 2023
Local energy firm, Sky Energy Africa, has said it will spend over K2.5 billion in the next 16 months to import Electric Vehicles (EVs) and put up supporting infrastructure in the country.

This comes as the country has faced acute shortage of fuel in recent months.

In an interview, Sky Energy Africa founder and Managing Director Schizzo Thomson said the EVs are environment-friendly and cost-effective.

He said the first batch is arriving in the country next week.

“We have done research and we think this is the future and we are going to create a market for these EVs. Our research says the environment is conducive and fertile for implementing this project,” Thomson said.

THOMSON—The vehicles can
be charged with solar power

He said there is a range of choice as regards the vehicle types as they include mini-sport utility vehicle (SUV), small four-seater vehicles and saloons.

On cost effectiveness, he said the vehicles can use electricity at a cost of K40,000 a month which is cheaper than most fuel-run vehicles.

“Basically, the EVs that we are bringing have a battery bank capacity of 30 to 70 kilowatts per hour. On average and depending on how much you travel, you may need to charge it four times a month, which means you are spending about K40,000 a month,” Thomson said.
