NGO urges people to plant fruit trees

11 Apr 2022

Renew’N’Able Malawi programmes Manager Devine Matare has urged community members in Traditional Authority (T/A) Bvumbwe, Thyolo, to plant fruit trees.

He made the call on Monday when his organisation donated 300 fruit tree seedlings and manure to 100 people.

Matare said the exercise was part of organization’s three-year project supporting small-scale farmers in the area.

He said: “We have been supporting farmers with inputs, drip irrigation technologies and some solar products to improve their farming. So, we want them to venture into agro-forestry.”

Group village head William commended Renew’N’Able Malawi for the donation. She said, “I will encourage my subjects to take cate of the trees. I will aslo ask other traditional leadrs to formulate by-laws to protect trees.”

One of the beneficiaries, Binuel Kuluwunda, said he failed to plant fruit trees because they are expensive.

“One fruit tree seedling costs K700 at Bvumbwe Research Station. But now we have the opportunity to have an orchard,” he said.

The national tree planning season starts in December to April.

President Lazarus Chakwera officially opened the season in February in Ntchisi by planting a mthethe tree.
