Newly elected Renewable Energy Industry Association of Malawi (Reiama)) President Soustain Chigalu has said embracing renewable energy could be key in addressing Malawi’s energy poverty and achievement of the long-term vision, Mw 2063.
Chigalu was speaking in Lilongwe during the organisation’s annual general meeting held under the theme Re-igniting, Energy in Renewable Energy.
Currently, just about 10 percent of Malawi’s population have access to grid power.
Chigalu, who took over the mantle from Andrew Nkoloma, said his organisation was committed to working together with government to ensure that more and more Malawians have access to sustainable energy.
”The new board is committed to continuously engage with all members, government, partners and stakeholders both locally and internationally. The board will discuss, review and take position on the issues raised by members and stakeholders.
”My vision is to make Malawi energy mix sufficient and sustainable with renewable energy through policy, advocacy, implementation and evaluation. I believe we can achieve this vision through the three pillars pinned on strategic planning, brand visibility, financial sustainability of Reiama,” he said.
Assistant Director in the Ministry of Energy, Thoko Malunga, said government appreciates the role that renewable energy plans in ensuring access to energy to Malawians.
Reiama Executive Director, Ron Kabvina, described the meeting as crucial in strengthening the operations of the organisation.
