The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has suspended the recruitment process of its top management, from chief executive officer (CEO) to directors.
The notice of withdrawal of the job vacancy was carried in Monday’s edition of The Daily Times.
The vacancy announcement had asked prospective employees to address their applications to Chairperson of the Escom Board Chokani Mhango, who could not be reached for a comment.
On top of the position of CEO, Escom also advertised openings for the positions of chief operations officer, director of planning and development, director of human resources and administration, director of procurement, director of distribution and customer services, director single-buyer, director of information, communication and technology and director of internal audit.
Escom Board Member John Gift Mwakhwawa referred The Daily Times to Board Chairperson Mhango.
“Unfortunately, it is only the chair who speaks for the board and he is out of the country,” he said.
Comptroller of Statutory Corporations Nuoazi Nthambala also referred the paper to the board for a comment.
Parastatals in the country— including Blantyre Water Board, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority and Central Medical Stores Trust— have been flying adverts for positions of top managers since the Tonse Alliance took over the reins of power.
However, an inside source at Escom said the recruitment had been stayed to give the board ample time to optimise the recruitment process to reflect on Escom’s unique status.
“After thorough analysis, it was discovered that Escom is both a parastatal and a private company. The way the recruitment process was designed; it was like the company is solely a parastatal. The adverts will be reissued,” said the source.
The source added that there was a human resource audit going on at Escom, after which some positions may change.
“What we want is that the vacancy advertisements should reflect the changes which may arise from the audit,” the source said.
