Feed the Future Africulture Diversification Activity, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has led stakeholders in planting bamboo along Lilongwe River banks.
Speaking during the bamboo-planting exercise, the NGO’s resilience coordinator Akshan Omar said the giant bamboo has strong roots which can hold soil to prevent erosion that can lead to siltation in the river.
“again, since it grows faster and regenerates, the giant bamboo can be used to restore river banks,” she said. In his remarks, ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources chief forestry officer Titus zulu commended the organisation for planting the giant bamboo along Lilongwe River Banks. “Another reason for growing vegetation along the river bank is to prevent encroachment,” he said.
Lilongwe City Council director of parks, recreation and environment Allan Kwanjana said they will sensitise the community members against cultivating along the river banks.
The NGO planted about 200 giant bamboos along the Lilongwe river Bank.
