The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) has warned minibus operators to stop loading passengers on fuel station premises, saying doing so violates laws governing filling stations.
Mera spokesperson Fitima Khonje said some minibus operators were violating provisions of Health and Safety Act.
”It is not right to be parking at fuel stations because there are hazardous substances at such places. in addition, the premises should not be congested,” Khonje Said.
She said minibus operators should utilize but terminals instead of ferrying passengers in undesignated places such as filling stations.
”Sometimes it’s the customers who start these things but we need to refrain from boarding buses at filling stations,” she said.
Minibus Owners Association of Malawi General Secretary Coaxley Kamange concurred with Mera.
He said it was illegal to use filling stations as bus terminals.
”Actually, we are discussing with stakeholders so that we can start deploying our stewards to manage fuel station; otherwise a K100000 fine would be imposed on habitual offenders. There is also the possibility that drivers could have their licences revoked,” Kamange said.
Kamange urged Local Government authorities to join hands with police in curbing the practice.
”We also plead with passengers to desist from patronizing fuel stations to board minibuses. Again city and town councils should provide services such as lights, shelters, security and toilets on bus terminals,” Kamange said.
