The Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) has announced completion of the Likoma and Chizumulu islands solar electricity projects which will be commissioned on November 16.
The Likoma project will be producing one megawatt while the Chizumulu project will be producing 300 kilowatts.
The two projects were earmarked to complete by July 31, 2020 but delayed as technical teams could not fly into the country due to travel restrictions.
Egenco spokesperson, Moses Gwaza said currently, engineers are doing the final touches in commissioning the stations.
Gwaza said there are many benefits attached to the projects including giving people of the two islands electricity for 24 hours and cutting costs from using diesel powered generators.
“It is expensive to operate power plants at the islands and there are huge logistical challenges to get fuel from the main land to the islands, so this project will iron out all those challenges,” Gwaza said.
