Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources Chairperson. Werani Chilenga, has said considering the great impact of climate change, there is a need for Malawi to embrace sources of clean energy to mitigate the impacts.
Chilenga said one of the lessons he has learned from the Climate Parliament Roundtable meeting held in Abu Dhabi from January 8 to 9 2020 was that Malawians residing in towns should refrain from using charcoal and opt for other sources of clean energy.
“It was agreed upon that people in cities and towns should refrain from the use of solid charcoal by the introduction of what they call Electric Pressure Cookers which has been introduced on most developed countries and they are trying to make sure that even developing countries should embrace the technology,” he said.
Chilenga said at the meeting, countries were urged to ensure that people in rural areas have access to electricity off the main grid. “Now countries are advocating for the use of off-grid power connections, by that will mean we should be having solar grids in our constituencies. In other countries, they have made it compulsory that every facility should have solar connection,” he said.
Apparently, the government, through the ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, in collaboration with other partners, has started installing solar power energy panels in areas where there is no electricity from Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi.
