Clergy embraces climate change adaptation

25 Mar 2019

Churches in the Northern Region have united in prayer and action against effects of climate change in the country.

This follows a conference at Ekwendeni in Mzimba on Tuesday where church leaders from various denominations met to share issues on environmental care and create a movement to speak with one voice on issues affecting the environment.

The leaders also want the movement to advocate for the integration of environment and climate change mitigation and adaptation into policies.

Speaking on behalf of the churches, Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Synod of Livingstonia general secretary the Reverend Levi Nyondo said the meeting was organised by the Malawi Creation Care Network which is running the Renew Our World global campaign.

“As Christians, we need to care about climate change because we care about people.

“The poorest people do the least to cause pollution, but they are the most affected by the increasingly frequent and fatal floods, famines, and heat waves.

“We understand that climate change is a justice issue, and we are joining together to prayerfully put our faith into action,” he said.

In Malawi, CCAP Synod of Livingstonia Development Department (Soldev) is a member and interim chair of the Malawi Creation Care Network for the North.

Soldev director Kenneth Sakala said the meeting also sought  to create the Northern Chapter for the campaign which wants to put church leaders at the centre of climate change mitigation programmes.
