Renewable Capacity Statistics 2018 – IRENA

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has released its latest data on renewable power generation capacity. Renewable Capacity Statistics 2018 is a comprehensive, up-to-date and accessible set of figures on renewable energy capacity statistics. It contains nearly 15,000 data points from more than 200 countries and territories.

Key Findings

  • Worldwide, there was a total of 2,179 gigawatts of renewable generation capacity at the end of 2017.
  • Renewable capacity grew 8.3% during 2017.
  • 167 GW of new global renewable generation capacity was added.
  • Asia installed 64% of new renewable capacity.
  • 146 million people were served by off-grid renewable power.
  • The amount of new hydro capacity commissioned in 2017 was the lowest seen in the last decade.
  • Three-quarters of new wind energy capacity was installed in five countries: China, USA, Germany, UK and India.
  • Asia continued to account for most of the increase in bioenergy capacity.
  • Asia continued to dominate the global solar capacity expansion, with a 72 GW increase.
  • Geothermal power capacity increased by 644 MW in 2017, with major expansions in Indonesia and Turkey.
