Multi-disciplinary construction company Mota-Engil has offered to help Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) restore Kapichira Hydro-electric Power Station in Chikwawa District.
Kapichira plant has been out of service due to floods and strong winds caused by Tropical Cyclone Ana.
Mota-Engil spokesperson Thomas Chafunya said they decided to help to offer support during what he called a national and regional tragedy.
“We have done several works hired by Egenco and, by the time the calamity befell Egenco Kapichira plant, we were also doing some project there— building a dyke to direct water into their main intake to make sure there is fluid and seamless production of electricity.
“This is a national tragedy and a regional tragedy. Kapichira is one of the biggest plants apart from Nkula A and B. We, as a responsible investor and contractor, felt duty-bound to offer our hand to Egenco. Should they need any other help that we need to put in, our expertise, to make sure that the site is up and running within a minimum period, we are willing to come forward to help the people of Malawi so that we can have electricity back,” he said.
Egenco spokesperson Moses Gwaza confirmed that Egenco had accepted the offer but said they were waiting for official communication.
