ESCOM will role out an exercise of migrating large power users from postpaid to prepaid meters next month.
In a statement, Escom says the exercise targets large power users who are on Maximum Demand tariff.
Escom says the migration aims at enabling large power users in the public sector to monitor their power consumption.
The first phase of the project will target public institutions, including parastatals.
The initial phase of the exercise will run from November 1. 2020 to March 31, 2021.
”The new system will allow large power users to plan, monitor and consequently, avoid electricity disconnections as a result of non payment of bills,” the statement reads.
In a related development, Escom has embarked on meter migration exercise for the rest of users across the country.
The exercise started in the Northern Region earlier this month and it is now underway in Lilongwe.
The Lilongwe exercise will run from October 19 to 31 2020.
The exercise involves migrating seven-digit meter users to 11-digit meters free of charge.
