Atleast one million Malawians are using green and clean energy sources, reducing pressure on hydro-electricity power and environment, Cooperation Network for Renewable Energy in Malawi statistics indicate.
Kenneth Mtago, Advocacy Officer for Renew’N’Able Malawi which is the master minder of the Cooperation Network for Renewable Energy in Malawi, said this means Malawi is on course to meeting its target on energy use.
“The target is that two million houses should be using fuel-effecient cook stoves by 2020,”he said. He, however, beamoaned the hydro-electric energy penetration rate in the country.

“There is a lot to be done to ensure that all have access to electricity and affordable energy sources. This means clean energy sources are the way to go”.
“However, there is need to uplift the financial standing of the masses as a significant part of the population cannot afford green and clean energy materials are readily available,” he said.
The development comes at a time the government plans to embark on a project to generate electricity using solar and wind power to maximise energy use in the country.
Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Deputy Minister, Welani Chilenga, recently said solar power generating panels would be installed in Salima while wind power plants will have been emarked for Mzimba District.
