Minister of Energy has unveiled the Eastern Backbone Project to enhance electricity supply reliability in the Northern and Central regions.
The project implemented by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom), involves replacing 42-year-old wooden power lines between Salima and Chintheche with a new 132kV transmission line on steel-latticed towers.
Making the announcement on Wednesday in Mzuzu, Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola said the project will ensure equal access to electricity for all and boost the country’s economy.
He said “Energy is the economy’s drive and enabler, impacting student performance, hospital operation and small businesses, among other things.
“This project will bring relief to Malawians, particularly in the Northern Region, who have endured frequent power outage and load shedding, and will support our economic growth and development.”
Escom chief executive officer Kamkwamba Kumwenda highlighted the challenges faced by the Central and Northern regions which rely on south-based power stations and an outdated Salima-Chintheche transmission line.
The project covers a route length of 420 kilometres across various districts including Nkhotakota and Kasungu and is expected to be completed within five years.
