Kamuzu University of Health Science (Kuhes) has phased out Smokeless Village Project it has been implementimg in Nsungwi Village, Chiladzulo District.
The project, which has run for about three years, was introduced to reduce levels of household and ambient air pollution as one way of reducing people’s risk of suffering from injuries such as burns.
Vincent Jumbe, one of the researchers from Kuhes, said through the project, they have reduced some of the health hazards that emanate from smoke.
“Through this project, we decided that we should follow and teach community members a few ways of endimng smike-exposure-related cooking. Through these years, community members were taought how tomake Chitetezo mbaulaand as we have concluded the vproject,we are happy because wetransffered skills to a selected few individuals who will carry on with the measures,”he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Rex Zakaliya, lauded kuhes for introducing the initiative.
“We had many problems in our village, including those associated with smoke inhalation.While it looks normal that cooking involves smoke, the project opened our eyes that there are so many effects that come with the smoke.
“The use of firewood was another problem because this ws depleting our natural resources. At the end of the project,we are happy and gratiful that they have taught us Mbaula Chitetezo making techniques and how to install windows in ktchen,”he said.
