Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has introduced awards in five primary schools in Lirangwe Education Zone, Blantyre in its afforestation drive.
MRA head of corporate affairs Steven Kapoloma said on Friday at Nj’onga Primary School during the launch of the initiative that Lirangwe, Chigodi, Nsambamwali, Chikwembere and the hosts will be judged based on survival rate of planted trees. “The My School, My Tree, My Future programme will see 2500 tree seedlings planted in the five schools involved. Each of the five schools will ensure that high survival rate of the seedling by watering, weeding, protecting the plants from livestock and human damage,” he said. Blanytre district forestry officer Geoffrey Kanyerere applauded the public tax collector for engaging schools in conserving nature as deforestation has affected the district.
The winning school will receive 1500 notebooks, 1250 notebooks for second and 1000 for third after being monitored for two years.
