For many years, Malawi has lagged behind in power distribution infrastructure, leading to energy losses during transmission. A $350.7 million (about K257.7 billion) Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant being managed through the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Malawi is set to transform Malawi’s power infrastructure. So far, Nkula A Hydro Power Station has been refurbished and a 400 kilovolt (KV) power line erected. This is an upgrade from the 132 kV. The infrastructure will help the country to tap power from Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique through the Southern Africa Power Pool. The upgraded power infrastructure also prepares the country to benefit from independent power producers who wish to invest in power generation to meet the ever-growing energy demand.
