Chikwawa District says it has planted 2 485 278 trees surpassing their target in the just-ended tree planting season.
Speacking in an interview on Monday Chikwawa district forestry officer (DFO) Hector Nkawihe said the district has so far surpassed its target of 1 500 000.
“We had a targte of 1 500 000 trees but we have been able to plant 2 485 278 trees during the 2017-2018 tree planting season which ended on April 15 this year,” he said.
Mkawihe attributed the achievement to good coordination with partners in the district. “I thank our partners like Majete Wildlife Reserve, Illovo, and World Food Programme (WFP) for participating in the tree planting exercise in the district.
These partners helped us a lotwith seedlings and other resources,” he said. The DFO further said they plan to increase awareness in the district to ensure communities value the importance of trees.
President Professor Peter Mutharika officially launched the 2017/18 tree planting season last December under the theme Restore Forests, Protect the Environment.
