The successful candidate will work on energy finance. This involves in-depth primary research on the performance of innovative finance mechanisms in channelling funds to decentralised, green energy access projects.
The work builds on existing IIED research tracking energy finance flows and on the role of ‘financial aggregators’ in overcoming barriers to channelling investment to decentralised energy. Through research, workshops, stakeholder dialogue and communications, the work aims to increase understanding of effective investment models among energy access funders.
The role will involve supporting colleagues and partners on the Energy Change Lab and on energy delivery models.
- The Energy Change Lab is an initiative of IIED and Hivos that works with pioneers and change-makers in Tanzania to build an energy system that is sustainable and people-centred. We do this by developing leaders, incubating prototypes for sector change, building evidence, connecting people and sharing ideas. The successful researcher will support global/national teams to engage stakeholders and deliver on-the-ground experiments.
- Our energy delivery models work, developed in collaboration with the official Catholic aid agency for England and Wales (CAFOD), involves ground testing a new participatory energy service design approach and adapting it to local contexts. In 2018/19 we will focus on applying the approach to local-level planning processes and on productive uses of energy in East Africa.
To succeed in this role candidates should hold a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Together with a solid research background, skills and experience evidenced by a track record of growing publications in own field.
You should also have a keen interest in and ability to provide analysis and advice on policy and practice, including toward small and large-scale private sector/social enterprises.
This role is part of the Shaping Sustainable Markets research group, which works to ensure that markets – big and small – are fair and enable poor people and nature to thrive. The group’s research focuses on the mechanisms, structures and policies that bring about more inclusive and green economies. The group is formed of researchers, convenors and thought leaders whose strength is in finding locally appropriate solutions to complex global and national problems.
