EVERLASTING blackouts will come to end by 2020/2032, the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) reportedly semi-annual review forum of the Millenium Challenge Account – Malawi. Escom announced a battery of plans to increase power generation from the current 260 megawatts to 1,538 megawatts. This would have been great news, only if it was easy to believe Escom on their promises.
When people have lived with a problem for such a long time as Malawians have persevered persistent blackouts, it takes a lot to convince them. The unbelief is so bad that at times it feels like we are jinxing ourselves. That feeling when they say, “electricity is affected the low levels of water, it will improve once the rain season starts”. In your heart you go like, “I doubt it. Come rain season they will say the mud is clogging the machines.”
When the colourful ambitions were announced, optimistic people
celebrated. But only after the targets are reached at the suggested dates will the pessimistic ones celebrate.
